About us
We have records of the archives of the Reformed Church in Transylvania since 1599. At that time, it consisted of the episcopal protocol and some diplomas. The collection suffered significant damage in 1658, and in 1849 it was completely destroyed in Nagyenyed.
The archives of the Transylvanian Reformed Supreme Consistory, established in 1713 (though it had already existed in loosely organized form during the previous two decades), comprised eight bundles of documents by 1714, stored in a separate chest. This survived intact and continues to grow to this day. (In 1871 the Supreme Consistory was reorganized into the Executive Council, but this did not alter the archival arrangement.)
The organization of a publicly accessible archive in the modern sense began in 1948. Archival work and research services commenced in 1960 in the records room of the Bishop’s Office. Between the two major restorations of the church in Farkas/Kogăliceanu street (1960–1963 and 2014–2016), the archive operated in the truncated tower of the church and in the cloister of the former monastery. Since 2016, the archive has been headquartered at Bocskai/Avram Iancu square 14.

Archival Holdings
The archive holds approximately 750 linear metres of records. Its collections include the archives of the central institutions of the Church District — among them the Supreme Consistory, Executive Council, Bishop’s Office, Faculty of Theology — as well as the records of ten dioceses (Kolozs–Kalota, Szék, Szamosújvár, Hunyad–Zaránd, Nagysajó, Kolozsvár, Dés, Torda, Nagyszeben, Küküllő). The holdings further comprise the archives of numerous parishes (e.g. Kolozsvár, Fogaras, Kóbor, Déva, Alvinc), several educational institutions, and the personal papers of individuals associated with the church (e.g. Márton Czelder, Gerő Szász, Mária Berde).
